Safeguard rights of indigenous people, Alec Baldwin tells Global Landscapes Forum

"It's clearly a movement of the people"

BONN, Germany (Landscape News) — Working together as a global community under a manifesto to break down barriers for a sustainable, healthy global environment is a movement worth building, said actor and activist Alec Baldwin on Tuesday in a video address to more than a thousand delegates attending the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) in Bonn, Germany.

“It is clearly a movement of the people, and I’m proud to join in because we desperately need the kind of leadership and vision that GLF is providing,” said Baldwin.

The intractable risks from continuing down our current path are real and dangerous, but the opportunities are at least as great, Baldwin said, stating that 2 billion hectares of degraded land covering an area roughly the size of South America could be restored.

“There are indigenous people safeguarding many of the world’s remaining standing forests,” he added. “We can empower them with rights. There are solutions emerging everyday that combine food security, livelihoods and progress towards climate and development goals. We can champion them.”

In recent years, Baldwin has been a staunch advocate of U.N. sustainable development initiatives on climate change, and attended the 2015 U.N. climate talks in Paris. He also speaks out in favor of forests and improved rights for indigenous peoples.

“My wife and I are expecting our fourth child next year, and I, of course, worry about what kind of world they will inherit,” he said. “Will it be one devastated by corruption, greed and an unstable climate – or a sustainable, equitable world shaped by a positive vision of what it would look like if we all worked together?”

Baldwin has performed in “The Aviator,” The Departed” and “The Cooler” for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award at the Academy Awards in Hollywood. Most recently he enthralled television fans with his comedic characterizations of President Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

He supports a range of humanitarian causes through the Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation, which he runs jointly runs with his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, an author and activist.
