Agriculture is one of Kenya’s most important sectors, contributing a third of the country’s gross domestic product and employing more than 40 percent of its population.
Last month, the Global Landscapes Forum brought together over 7,000 people online and in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, for a series of conversations around sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, land degradation and the climate crisis.
At GLF Nairobi 2023: A New Vision for Earth, the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program hosted a conversation focusing on sustainable value chains in Kenya.

Dr Elijah K. Gichuru is a chief principal research scientist and the institute director of the Coffee Research Institute (CRI), an Institute of Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO). He holds a PhD in agriculture from the University of Nairobi and has 29 years of research experience, during which he has published numerous papers and conferences, book chapters, and mentored and supervised a number of young scientists. He is responsible for the coordination and promotion of coffee research and has developed extensive linkages with research institutions and stakeholders worldwide. He has received research grants and coordinated projects implemented by multidisciplinary and multinational teams.
Anne Fidelis Itubo is a dedicated and experienced senior conservator of forests. She is the head of the Participatory Forest Management Division at the Kenya Forest Service. She holds a master’s degree in forest science and forest ecology from the Georg August University of Göttingen in Germany. She has 27 years of experience in sustainable forest management and conservation practice and optimizing forest resources for ecological integrity and economic growth, focusing on community livelihood improvement. Anne is the focal point in integrated landscape management for the conservation and restoration of the Mount Elgon ecosystem in western Kenya, a FOLUR Kenya project supported by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and Global Environmental Facility 7th Cycle.
