From climate finance to carbon markets to new NDCs, the COP29 climate summit has its agenda jam-packed with hot debates that could make or break our future on this planet.
We’ve already explored what to expect going into the conference, as well as the latest developments unfolding every day.
But what do people really hope to see as we stand at a climate crossroads? We asked around the COP29 venue in Baku for answers.
“This is a crucial week. Last week, the subsidiaries to the COP closed, and there were challenges with mitigation and the fact that we didn’t want to have any conversations.
I don’t want any more of that. I want finance negotiations to go forward and our policymakers to step up.”
“I want to see more commitments to support climate adaptation in developing countries. I want to see how this financing will be channeled to local communities and practitioners.”
Sunday Geofrey, SUHUCAM, Cameroon
“I would love to achieve all of the goals around climate finance: the new collective quantified goal
(NCQG), finance for loss and damage, adaptation finance – everything related to finance.”
Ashik Iqbal, Youth4Nature, Bangladesh
“Coming off of the Biodiversity COP16, it’s important for us to understand and connect synergies and trade-offs between biodiversity and climate and across the Rio Conventions.
That includes connecting climate finance with biodiversity finance, and even intersections with food systems and social aspects.”
Heitor Dellasta, Sitawi, Brazil
Asmita Rawat, Youth4Nature, Nepal
